Why We Love Volunteering at the Humane Society for Greater Savannah (and why you might too!)
Earlier this year we started joining the dozens of volunteers who give a little time to help the amazing staff at the Humane Society for Greater Savannah in their mission to “better the lives of pets and people”.
Each week we photograph as many of the incoming animals as we can, for the HSGS staff to post onto their adoption website http://www.humanesocietysav.org/adoption/ (we can’t take credit for all of the photos on the site; other local photographers also contribute to the effort).
Our hope is that professional-quality photos of these deserving animals will help families searching online for a new pet to make a connection that will lead to lots more animals find their forever homes. Admittedly these images don’t get the full retouching treatment that we usually apply to our portraits (yes, even our pet portraits), but It’s important that we get quality images to the HSGS staff as quickly as possible, to help the animals find new homes sooner. That said, we wanted to start sharing some of our HSGS photos simply because each animal we photograph steals a little piece of our hearts.
We do have a confession to make though…our motives for volunteering at the Humane Society for Greater Savannah aren’t all entirely benevolent. Honestly, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend a few hours each week. We absolutely love spending time with the animals. Sometimes they can be a little stressed by the shelter environment (no matter how awesome the HSGS staff and how incredibly clean the facility), and sometimes they’ve been rescued from less-than-desirable circumstances, so the little bit of attention and affection that we can share with them is returned a thousand times over. We’re even convinced that our sweet little pit bull-mix, Liberty Belle (who was herself a rescue dog), is okay with us coming home smelling like the dogs and cats at the shelter.
Each week (or so) we’ll post new images on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/savannahportraitandweddingphotography/) for you to enjoy…i mean, who doesn’t love pretty pictures of dogs and cats? Who knows, you might even like them enough to volunteer at your local animal shelter…or even better…adopt one of these beautiful animals.
